Athletic Bilbao v Real Madrid

On Saturday night, Real Madrid face a test of their perfect La Liga record this season when they visit San Mames to face Athletic Bilbao.

Athletic have played just two La Liga games this season, collecting a win and a draw against Leganes and Huesca respectively. The solid start to the season was needed after Athletic ended last season in poor form in the Spanish top-flight.

In fact, the home side’s record of two wins in their last nine league outings does not bode well when they are facing Real Madrid.

Athletic’s usual solid home form at San Mames has slipped slightly in recent games. However, the home side has still suffered just three defeats on home soil in 16 outings in La Liga. Los Leones also earned a goalless draw at San Mames against Real Madrid last season.

Real Madrid have made a bright start to life under new coach Julen Lopetegui, winning all three of their opening La Liga games. Only an even better start to the campaign from arch-nemesis Barcelona has kept the European champions from topping the table.

The visitors have now won four out of their last five La Liga matches dating back to last season. A key to that decent recent form has been their attacking prowess, as the team from the capital have now scored two or more goals in their last eight La Liga games.

However, Los Blancos have a mixed recent away record in La Liga, winning just one of their last four matches on their travels.

Team News

Athletic look set to be without Iago Herrerin, Mikel Balenziaga and Inigo Lekue due to injury. Real Madrid have no reported injury problems. Boss Lopetegui is likely to start the game with an unchanged starting line-up from last time out.

Match Prediction

Athletic always tend to be difficult opponents to Spain’s big boys at San Mames. However, Real Madrid look to have the bit between their teeth and I expect Los Blancos to record a narrow win in a high scoring game.
