Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona

On Sunday night, Athletic Bilbao host La Liga leaders Barcelona at San Mames, as the visitors look to consolidate their position at the top of the Spanish top-flight table.

Athletic Bilbao are enduring a rather inconsistent campaign in La Liga so far. The home side are currently 12th in La Liga after a 2-1 defeat at Real Sociedad ended a seven-game unbeaten run for the Basque side in the Spanish top-flight.

Athletic’s recent La Liga outings have been relatively tight, low scoring affairs, with under 2.5 goals scored in six of their last eight outings.

Gaizka Garitano’s team are unbeaten in six La Liga games at San Mames, having won their last two home games in the league against Sevilla and Real Betis. Their recent home games in La Liga have been low scoring, with under 2.5 goals scored in their last six outings.

Barcelona are six points clear of second place Atletico Madrid at the top of La Liga. The Catalan giants are unbeaten in ten La Liga games, having recorded eight wins. However, last time out in La Liga, Valencia held the champions to a 2-2 draw at the Nou Camp.

Ernesto Valverde’s side has certainly found their scoring boots of late, scoring at least two goals in their last nine matches in La Liga.

The visitors are also unbeaten in their last six away games in La Liga, having recorded four straight wins while scoring at least two goals in all four victories.

Athletic look set to be without Inigo Lekue, Aritz Aduriz and Mikel Rico due to injury.

Barcelona have injury problems of their own, with Samuel Umtiti and Rafinha and goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen set to miss out. Full-back Jordi Alba is suspended.

Match Prediction

Athletic have often proven tough opponents for the big guns in Spain on their own patch. However, I believe Barcelona will have enough quality to defeat the home side in a low scoring encounter.
