Arsenal V Man Utd
BETTING & MATCH PREVIEW
Arsenal welcomes Manchester United at the Emirates on New Year’s Day. The action gets underway at 20:00 and will be shown live on BT SPORT 1. Mikel Arteta’s men will be looking to bounce back from their recent defeat at the hands of Chelsea. Manchester United will move closer to the coveted 4th spot in the Premier League table if they can emerge victorious from their visit to the Emirates. Solskjaer’s United will be aiming to build on their 2-0 win over Burnley last Saturday. Goals from Martial and Rashford were enough to sink Burnley in a close game at Old Trafford.
For Arsenal, this fixture has taken on added weight. Typically the Arsenal vs Manchester United game doesn’t need any additional pressure. However, the Gunners go into this game, having lost four consecutive home matches for the first time since 1959. Man Utd will arrive at the Emirates on a run of decent form. Ole’s men have only lost once in the previous nine games. In the four most recent meetings between the clubs, United have won one, Arsenal have won one, and there have been two draws.
A significant boost for Man Utd comes in the return of Paul Pogba and Eric Bailly to the starting line-up. Pogba came on as a sub for United against Watford but didn’t play a few days later against Burnley. Arsenal could welcome back midfielder Granit Xhaka, who missed the home defeat by Chelsea because of illness. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be looking for his in-form Striker Marcus Rashford to provide the goal threat against Arsenal. Rashford has netted 16 times for the Reds this season and contributed five assists.
A glance at the odds for this fixture reveals several decent bets for football punters. The bookmakers have Manchester United as the slight favourites to win this fixture. Betfair is quoting odds of 6/4 for United to win, with Arsenal (7/4) for the victory. Given the two clubs recent form, those odds look fair to me. The draw is priced at 13/5 and looks like the best bet for savvy punters. When you consider United’s leaky defence and robust attacking options, this match could be a solid bet for over 2.5 goals. (8/13 Betfair). On the goalscoring front, Marcus Rashford is 4/1 to score the first goal.
Typically, Arsenal Vs Manchester United is one of the most difficult Premier League fixtures to call. On recent form, Man United should have just enough quality to win this. However, Arsenal will be fighting extra hard to ensure they don’t lose 5 in a row at home. Can you imagine the meltdown on ArsenalFanTV? It would be epic fam! In all seriousness, I can see this match ending as a draw. My only reservation about that calling that result is United’s forward line. Recently, they have been very unlucky in front of goal. Shots were hitting the post, clearances off the line and world-class saves from ordinary keepers. If they can find a slice of luck, I could see Rashford, Greenwood or Martial banging a hattrick against someone very soon.
